Case challenged the rights a grandparent had to contact grandchildren

TWO young brothers sent Christmas cards from their grandfather for the first time will not see them for years under a Family Court ruling.

The cards, and any other letters, will stay in a post office box paid for by the grandfather until the grandsons he has never met – Adam, 6, and Tom, 4 – ask to see them after they have turned at least 13.

That may never happen because their mother does not want them to have any contact with the man.

Lawyers yesterday said the case challenged the rights a grandparent had to contact grandchildren since amendments to the Family Law Act in 2006 gave grandparents a more important role in their upbringing.
